Located in the two northern-most provinces of Sumatra (Aceh and North Sumatra), its 2.6 million hectares are exceptionally rich in biological diversity. Because of this and owing to its dramatic topography, the ecosystem functions as a life-support system for more than four million people living in the surrounding area.
The subtle combination of moderate Islam and mystical traditions in Aceh has resulted in the province’s forests being only slightly impacted by humans and no known extinctions of species have occurred in the last century. During the same time the rest of Sumatra has lost some 80 percent of its forests.
Despite perceptions to the contrary, man cannot live in isolation from the rest of the biosphere. All of the oxygen that we breathe is produced by natural organisms. An equitable climate and a regular supply of high quality water are the foundations of agriculture on which civilization depends. The Leuser Ecosystem provides these services and for this reason is considered to be a life support system.
Law No.26/2007 on Spatial Planning has designated important conservation and areas of high biodiversity as National Strategic Areas. One such area is the Gunung Leuser National Park, and the broader Leuser Ecosystem.Leuser Ecosystem
